Six years ago I read a story called To Write Love On Her Arms, which had been linked on Anberlin’s myspace. It was a story that hit home, and hit it hard.
It was something I immediately knew I wanted to be involved with, because I wished that I’d had people like Jamie around when I went through my own struggle with depression and self-harm. I remembered how absolutely alone I felt during that time and how something like TWLOHA would have helped, because at the time this wasn’t really a topic people discussed, and when they did, it was a shameful, horrible thing.. There was no outlet like the TWLOHA team has assembled to remind and reassure those struggling that there are people out there that care, that you’re not the only one feeling these things & fighting these demons.
Five years ago, at an Anberlin show, I had the pleasure of meeting Jamie and after a few minutes of talking to him I made the decision that I was going to do just as he had done and write love on my arm, but instead of using a pen, I used something permanent. It’s been a wonderful self-reminder when I’m feeling down and a great way to spread the message, because I get asked about it all the time.
I wear TWLOHA to remind everyone, myself included, that you are never alone.
Thank you for your kind words. Thank you for believing. Thank you for your support.
